Are there taboo topics in therapy?

In short: No, there are no taboo topics in therapy (at least with me!).

But I do notice that there are two common topics that clients shy away from: sex, and money.

For any topic, you as the client have the power to set boundaries about what you are and are not comfortable talking about. You don’t even need to share a reason for setting that boundary. In fact, I’m a great person with whom to practice setting boundaries!

That said, I have observed a special hesitancy to discuss sex and money. It makes sense: these are culturally taboo topics as well, and we tend to only discuss them with our closest friends, if we discuss them with anyone at all! They can bring up shame.

But our sex life and our financial worlds are part of our health. Health is multi-faceted, and so much more than just the physical: it includes aspects such as spiritual, social, financial. Grey and Stoner use the popular concept of a wheel to illustrate the many facets of health. This model allows us to holistically address all the factors in our health.

As a therapist, part of my job is to be comfortable discussing anything. I am willing to listen to and discuss any of these topics. When you work with me, know that no topic is off limits.
